Bone protruding from elbow!

Update posted 3 years ago

Franco still has us very concerned! Upon taking him to the vet, we learned that Franco did have a dislocation/fracture to his right wrist at some point, which healed (incorrectly) on its own. He also had an abscess on his right elbow, which needed to be cultured.

His veterinarian suspects he may have a serious bone infection, or possibly even bone cancer, but we need those test results to know for certain. In the meantime, Franco has been home with his foster--until today, when his foster noticed BONE starting to protrude from his affected elbow! Can you imagine how painful it must be?!? See photo below.

We're getting him to the vet first thing for more x-rays and examinations. Hopefully, we will soon have all the information we need for a full treatment plan for Franco--and the hope of a healthy future ahead.

Franco needs our help, fast! He arrived at Homeward Trails on Saturday, from a shelter in rural Virginia, and we could see almost instantly how much pain he was in. Franco is missing his back left leg--we aren't sure whether it is a birth defect or the result of some accident long ago. What's more concerning, is that his front right wrist appears to be fused together! He likely broke his foot/wrist at some point, and never received proper treatment. The bones healed on their own, and fused together in such a way that it is incredibly painful for him to walk! He cannot move his foot or use his leg naturally. Poor Franco only has three legs, and with his wrist like that, he is down to just two weight-bearing legs. He can hardly get around at all!

We suspect he has been compensating for this injury by leaning onto his elbow. Now, his front right elbow is raw and swollen. He has a ruptured abscess that is leaking puss and clearly infected.

We've started Franco on antibiotics and pain medication, but he really needs to see a vet straight away. He will need x-rays to understand the extent of the damage to his right leg--and what we can do to fix it.

We're starting this fundraiser at $500 to cover the cost of his immediate care, but suspect Franco will be needing our help for some time to come. There will be treatments and follow up exams--please keep Franco in your thoughts, and keep an eye out for his emerging needs as we gather more information about his medical condition and evolving needs!
