Cooper has passed, but Cesar is still Fighting for his Life!
Early on Sunday morning we received an update from this litter's PR foster that Cooper was salivating uncontrollably every time he tried to eat or drink water. Cooper and Cesar, who both had fevers, were rushed to the emergency vet, where Cooper started having seizures.
The vet diagnosed the pups with distemper, a highly contagious and often fatal disease affecting the nervous, respiratory and gastrointestinal systems.
The dogs were given medications and put in isolation but Cooper's seizures continued to get worse. On Monday, we had hope that Cooper might pull through when his seizures briefly reduced, but by Tuesday afternoon it was clear that Cooper's condition was quickly deteriorating and our only option left was humane euthanasia. Cooper's foster said that Cooper knew it was time, and laid down relaxed in her arms as he drifted to sleep.
While we are morning Cooper's loss, Cesar is STILL FIGHTING and we desperately need your help to give them the support they need to continue this fight and get them to VA for adoption when they are healthy!
Little CesarThis litter of 6 (Cesar, Amor, Hope, Grace, Cooper and Faith) were found as strays begging for scraps in Puerto Rico. One day, a single pup ventured to a local's home in search of food. Taking pity on the lonesome pup, the owner the little boy --Cesar-- something to eat. After receiving food from them, Cesar continued to return for more, but soon he was not alone. After several days, more and more pups would appear with him until the entire litter of 6 tagged along, hoping to find a few bites as their next meal.
The pups were in TERRIBLE condition. They were dangerously underweight and their skin was in such poor shape that their rescuer was terrified they had contracted mange. After being rushed to the vet we found that they did not have mange-- but the condition of their skin was due to severe malnutrition and a flea infestation.
It has taken more than a month in foster care to get these pups healthy enough to receive the necessary vaccinations in order to fly. It has been a long process, but now that they are FINALLY getting enough food their growth has increased rapidly! We were lucky to get Amor on a flight before she was too large for the carry-on requirements, but the rest of the litter will no longer fit! We are desperate to get these pups onto a cargo flight ASAP so they can FINALLY find their forever homes.
This litter has fought for survival from the day they were born, constantly in search of food, water and shelter. They avoided the countless perils that every stray in Puerto Rico faces--getting hit by traffic, getting poisoned by locals who thought them a nuisance, any wild animals who might cause them harm--just to name a few. Please, these pups deserve to stop fighting for their survival and learn the pleasures of a loving home. Help us get this litter home now!
