Treatment is working!
8.23.2021 -- For little Oakley, there was no time to wait. We paid out-of-pocket to ensure she had access to the lifesaving treatment she needed to combat the deadly parvovirus. We acted quickly and did what was needed to do to provide the supportive care and medications that would give her a fighting chance. And it worked! Oakley is responding well to treatment and seems to be on the road to recovery.
But the treatment for parvo is expensive. Just because we were able to cover her funds up front, doesn't mean we don't need to make up for it now. We need that money, so the next desperate pup who comes our way, holding on for dear life, can receive that same level of care and compassion. So they too, will have a fighting chance.
We still need $615 to meet Oakley's fundraising goal. Can you help?
Oakley has had a terrible couple weeks. This 4-month-old pup was surrendered by her owners to a shelter. She was so confused, heartbroken to have lost her only family! While she did make it from the shelter into Homeward Trails' care, she had only just arrived when she began vomiting and having diarrhea.
Our team knows all too well what those symptoms can mean for puppies. After a quick test, our worst fears were confirmed. Oakley has parvovirus.
Parvo is deadly. Common symptoms of parvo include not only vomiting and diarrhea, but fever, lethargy, anorexia, weight loss, and dehydration. Puppies with parvo can decline rapidly and die, making a quick response even more critical.
We rushed Oakley to the vet Sunday evening, and started her on treatments straight away. Her veterinary team is optimistic--it seems we caught it early. Aside from the vomiting and diarrhea, Oakley still seems to have plenty of energy. Hopefully, with the right mix of treatments and supportive care, she will be back to feeling her best in no time. And maybe then, life will finally take a turn for the better. Maybe then, Oakley will be able to find the forever family she deserves.
